Box Springs and Frame Repurposed

Remember the box springs in the background of the picture I mentioned on our pallet bookcase page?  Check it out...

and

I like the idea of wrapping the springs around crystal candlestick holders.  The clear crystal doesn't take away from the "look" but does hold the candles a bit more sturdy (and keeps the wax off your cabinet!)

That is just the first project!  So many more to go to repurpose two old box springs!  The frame and wreath look fantastic on the walls in the guest room!

How to break down an old Box Spring:

I had a few hours to kill before my shows started at 9 so I figured I'd get to work on breaking down the first box spring.  I didn't realize how difficult this task would be.

I came to the conclusion that trying to pull the fabric from every single staple was just NOT the way to do this.  I grabbed a pair of scissors, cut around the outside of the wood, and the fabric was off in no time.

In order to remove the springs, I used the below two tools - Pliers and end nips (for cutting the metal staples)

I FINISHED the first box spring today!  WOOP WOOP And right now it's outside with it's first coat of white spray paint ;-)

And what you should do with the metal frame from this box spring:

After removing all the springs from the wood and metal frames, I took the metal frame outside and sprayed it with 2 coats (front and back) of white paint to match the design of the guest room.  Below is the final product.  I chose pictures from both sides of our family, dropped them on a drive, and printed them out at the local CVS in black/white and sepia for the "old" picture look.

Final Product - in the guest room

What to do with that pile of springs!

First you will need wire cutters, metal floral wire, and springs
Next, use the metal wire to attach the springs together.
Note: I connected two at a time to make it easier to handle.  After that was done, I put the pieces together and attached them to one another.
Here's a close up

Final Product - took about 30 minutes and it looks great in the guest room!
