Pallet Bookcase

Follow our journey below to see what we accomplish each day to completion as we built a pallet bookcase for the guest room we're redecorating.  We plan the dimensions to be 3 ft. tall, 3 ft. long, and 18 inches wide.

After the first 2 hours....
Apparently after talking design with dear hubby, we needed more wood so my first task was a trip to Lowes for 1x2's, 2x4's, and screws.  Of course you're always going to leave with more than you went for, right?  It's like going to the grocery store - oh yea, we need this, and that, and ohh yea, this!  So I picked up more sandpaper, a roll of paper for the staining/painting process, stain, polyurethane and a couple plastic pales for the brush cleaner.

As I'm typing this, Phil is cutting up the last pallet.  Thinking through the process, we'll probably need a couple more now.  We'll see how far we get today.

Don't forget to divide your wood!

Psst - see those old box springs in the background?  Yep, my NEXT project.
I've found some great ideas on Pinterest already! Can't wait!  :-)

So Phil finished cutting up the pallet and I was summoned back into the garage (aka our workshop) to put the base and top together.  I just finished sanding both pieces and needed to add the pics to the site (but of course!)

We ended day 1 with the frame complete.  It was a bit more challenging than we anticipated because the screws from the top and bottom pieces were getting in the way of where we wanted to put our side pieces.  Take that into account if you plan to build this!

BTW - Phil told me to add in here that the supports to connect the base/top are 1x2's which he screwed in using 2" wood screws.  Don't forget to wood putty the holes!

Day 2
Well everyone. Below are the pictures from today's work.  It's 11:15am and we're done for the day.  Do you know why? Lacrosse game at 1:40 and today is the beginning of Regular Season Football - GO EAGLES!  Oh, and we ran out of pallets ;-)

DAY 3

We picked up 4 more pallets today (thank you Lowes!) so while I was out running an errand with our eldest son, Phil decided to work on the project for a couple hours.  He was able to finish one of the outsides and the inside back inset pieces before Monday Night Football!

Day 4 pic
Phil finished the inside inset pieces and the left outside.  I came through after him and filled in all the screw holes with the wood putty.

Day 5
Phil took the rest of the week off so he's been hard at work finishing up the build so I can sand and stain the piece.  It's not even 11am and he's already added the shelf and the top trim.  Take a look!
Just a thought - if I get tired of having this as a bookcase, I could totally turn it around and use it as a bar! ;-)  Now that is repurposing!

Finally, I got my hands back on it!  I don't know who is more excited about the bookcase, me or him!  Here's my contribution for today.  I sanded 3 times and started to stain.  I'll finish up the staining tomorrow morning.  Need to flip the piece but it needs to dry overnight first.

We used weathered grey for this project.  It's going to be perfect in the guest room.

I took this picture to show the comparison of natural pallet wood vs. stain.  Heads up - pallet wood soaks up stain very quickly so brush it on and immediately wipe off with a dry clean rag.  If you're looking for a darker color, it's always easy to add more.  If you leave it on too long, you're not getting it off!

Final product....The wait is over!
